Finish carpentry and Japanese woodworking
A six-year apprenticeship in a remote Japanese fishing village—beginning with sweeping the shop floor and eventually hand-cutting joints for timber frames—instilled in James Wiester a strong work ethic and a thoughtful, problem-solving approach to carpentry. That was decades ago.
Today, James has earned a stellar reputation as a skilled craftsman specializing in high-end home finishes and bespoke projects for homeowners and small businesses. Whether leading finish crews through large-scale installations of trim and cabinetry in luxury homes, troubleshooting complex design challenges, or crafting beautiful yet practical pieces for everyday use, James approaches his work with pride, precision, and a good sense of humor.
Since graduating from Wesleyan University and spending ten years living in Japan, James has built a successful career in the Bay Area and Southern California through his independent company, JS Kenchiku—which means "construction" in Japanese. James is highly proficient in Japanese and Spanish. He is also fully licensed and insured.
I have worked with numerous contractors to manage finish carpentry projects designed by architects and designers. In many of these projects, I serve as the foreman for the carpentry team—directing less experienced craftsmen and overseeing installations. My areas of specialization on these projects include:
In addition to working on large-scale construction projects, I am frequently sought out by homeowners and small business owners to help troubleshoot functional design issues or assist in the creation of bespoke pieces. My experience handling high-end artwork also allows me to offer specialized services for art installation and display. Common project areas include:
James brought a high level of skill and craftsmanship to numerous high-end residential projects, working on tasks that included siding, trim, complex joinery, box beams, doors, and paneling.
His experience was evident in the smart, efficient, and composed way he approached each job, making him a key contributor to the success of our projects. Beyond his technical abilities, James also took the time to mentor junior staff, further demonstrating his leadership and dedication to the team.

James was the lead finish carpenter on a prestigious project that my company built. His ability to keep multiple small crews working productively throughout the house while working ahead to lay out and problem solve the next challenges was impressive to say the least. His vision and skill are unsurpassed in my experience managing high end, super custom work on the peninsula for many years.
Sam Gifford, Peninsula Custom Homes
James brings immeasurable integrity and experience that to the job. His knowledge of fine high-end finish carpentry and traditional wood working is unique among tradesmen I have worked with. James is a leader in his field and on the jobsite. James has managed small 100k jobs for me to large 400+k projects. The result is always a satisfied client!
Victor Rousse, Acapella Craftsmen Inc.
Aced an extremely technical high end project. Given my background in finish woodworking, his mastery of the trade and excellent leadership skills were obvious as he directed his crew of around 12 finish carpenters. His problem-solving skills and attention to detail were top notch. With his technical and people skills he could be trusted to install fine architectural woodwork, run a crew of finish carpenters or run the entire job.
Jim Becker, Cello & Maudru Construction Company
James is a first-rate finish guy, and while that’s special on its own, he has other qualities that truly distinguish him: Leadership. He is an unflinching taskmaster when necessary. Personality. Interested, engaged, ready with a laugh and a joke. Tri-lingual. Fluent Japanese and some nasty job-site Spanish to go along with the subtly highbrow English from his uncommonly good education. Stoic. The opposite of a prima donna. He will slither into a crawlspace with a jackhammer if that’s what needs to be done.
